Boris Johnson came under fire today for suggesting women only go to university to find a husband.
The Mayor of London?s off-the-cuff comment at last week?s launch of the World Islamic Economic Forum appeared to be intended as a joke.
But Labour equality spokeswoman Kate Green denounced it as ?insulting? to women who have been to university, and urged the mayor to apologise.
Mr Johnson?s remark came as Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was asked about boosting female education in the Muslim world.
Mr Razak said: ?Before coming here, my officials have told me that the latest university intake in Malaysia, a Muslim country, 68% will be women entering our universities.?
The mayor sparked loud laughter and some groans by interjecting: ?They?ve got to find men to marry.?
Ms Green said: ?Boris Johnson may think his buffoonery allows him to get away with his outdated opinions but this isn?t funny.
?These comments are insulting to the women across the country and across the world who have gone to university, worked hard and used their talents to get on. He should apologise.?
