Ranch Rodeo ? Competition with a real cowboy twist | The Voice of ...

Hairpin Ranch

??????????????? OAKLEY ? Oakley was the site of a rodeo with a twist last weekend, as the Fourth Annual Oakley Ranch Rodeo took place.

??????????????? Unlike the usual rodeos which attract spectators, this event showcased the abilities of those men who call themselves real cowboys ? ranch hands who brand, doctor, cut and sort, and work cattle in general.

??????????????? Nineteen ranch teams competed in the event, although some teams were made up of hands from other ranches, giving some competitors a chance to double up on the events.

The events were set up for two or four man teams and pitted ranch against ranch rather than an individual competition.

??????????????? The events were team branding, doctoring, wild horse roping, team roping, trailering, and working cow horse competition.

??????????????? In the branding, two men were horseback and two were on the ground. Strict rules were followed and any unnecessary roughness to cattle, horses or other cowboys resulted in disqualification.

??????????????? In the team doctoring, two? two-man teams compete and the time was added for each pair. They must team rope the animal, and then one ride dismounted, removed the rope from the calf?s neck and laced all four feet in the ropes, stretching the animal then remounting his? horse.

??????????????? Team roping was similar to team roping in other rodeos.

??????????????? The horse roping event was probably the most lively event of the rodeo, as wild horses were brought from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation. Two teams from each ranch competed. They had to rope the horse and then catch both front feet; once both cowboys dallied and the ropes were tight, the clock stopped.

??????????????? At Oakley?s rodeo Saturday, one of the wild horses decided it did not like arena action and proceeded to jump the arena gate and lead the entire competitors? pool on a wild horse chase around the Oakley rodeo grounds. After nearly 10 minutes of live and lively action, the horse was subdued by one of the competitors and led back into the arena, where it was then led to a holding? pen.

??????????????? Following this event, the working cow horse competition was a live demonstration of the expert timing and ability of the horses used on ranches.

??????????????? The trailer loading event was another live action-packed event, with hooping, hollering and lots of fast action.

??????????????? The overall winners of the weekend event were the teams from the Hairpin Ranch; Ike Folsom, Casey Brunson, Matt Azevedo and Jade Stoddard.

??????????????? The second place team was the Pup Pack and the third place team was the Wolf Pack Ranch.
