Reyes, Braun battle for NL batting title (AP)

NEW YORK ? Jose Reyes was in reach of becoming the first Mets player to win a batting title, bunting for a hit in the first inning of his team's finale before leaving what could be his final game for New York.

Reyes raised his average to .337057, 2 1-2 points higher than Milwaukee's Ryan Braun going into the Brewers' regular-season finale against Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Braun began the final day hitting .334525. Braun could win the NL batting title by going 3 for 4, which would raise his average to .337478.

Reyes said he told Mets manager Terry Collins "if I go 1 for 1, take me out of the game.'"

It may have been Reyes' final game for the Mets. He is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

"A lot of people told me I shouldn't play today. I said, `Oh, no. I want to play. I want to be there for the fans," Reyes said. "I don't know if I'm going to be here next year."

Braun said he respected "whatever decision he decided to make and ultimately he left the door open for me. It's not impossible. I've gotten three hits in a game plenty of times. So, it's still attainable, it's still a possibility."

Detroit's Miguel Cabrera was pretty much assured of the AL batting crown, entering with a .343 average and a five-point lead over the Texas Rangers' Michael Young.

Toronto's Jose Bautista was leading for his second straight major league home run title with 43, while the Brewers' Prince Fielder and the Dodgers' Matt Kemp were tied for the NL lead with 38.

After threatening to become the first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967, Kemp faded from the batting race and had a .324 average entering the final day. Kemp led the NL with 124 RBIs, and the Yankees' Curtis Granderson topped the AL with 119, one more than teammate Robinson Cano and two in front of Boston's Adrian Gonzalez.

Cincinnati's Drew Stubbs struck out 205 times, ending Mark Reynolds three-year run as strikeout king.

Eugenio Velez of the Dodgers entered his last game 0 for 36, a record for at-bats by a position player without a hit, topping Hal Finney's 0 for 35 with Pittsburgh in 1936. Hitless in 45 at-bats since May 2010, Velez tied the modern record for non-pitchers shared by Pittsburgh's Bill Bergen (1909), Dave Campbell of San Diego and St. Louis (1973) and Milwaukee's Craig Counsell (this season).

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki had 184 hits, ending his record streak of 10 consecutive 200-hit seasons. While Starlin Castro (206) was assured of the NL hits title, Texas' Michael Young (212), and Gonzalez and Red Sox teammate Jacoby Ellsbury (both 211) all had a chance in the NL.

Bautista (.612) and Braun (.601) led in slugging percentage, and Bautista (.449) and Cincinnati's Joey Votto (.417) topped on-base percentage, with Votto on track to top the NL for the second straight season.

Atlanta's Michael Bourn had 59 steals and will lead the NL for the third straight year, while Oakland's Coco Crisp and the Yankees' Brett Gardner shared the AL lead with 49.

Among pitchers, Detroit's Justin Verlander at 24-5 had the most wins in the majors since Arizona's Randy Johnson in 2002. Verlander also won the AL ERA (2.40) and strikeouts (250) titles, becoming the first winner of a pitching triple crown since San Diego's Jake Peavy in 2007.

Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers led the NL in ERA (2.28) and strikeouts (248) and tied Arizona's Ian Kennedy for the lead in wins (21).

Tampa Bay's James Shields had 11 complete games, the first in double digits since Johnson's 12 in 1999, and Philadelphia Cliff Lee became the first pitcher with six shutouts since Tim Belcher's eight for the Dodgers in 1989.

Pittsburgh, 72-89 entering its finale, had a losing record for a major league-record 19th straight season, extending its own record.

Stocks trim gains as worries about Europe return (AP)

NEW YORK ? An early rally faded on Wall Street Wednesday as traders worried about Europe's ability to contain its debt crisis.

Stocks opened higher but turned mixed after the first hour of trading. At midday the Dow was up just 26 points, giving up a 126 point gain from shortly after the opening bell. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq edged lower.

Traders focused on remarks from German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggesting that the second Greek bailout package might have to be renegotiated. Several European leaders want banks to take bigger losses on Greek bonds. France and the European Central Bank oppose the idea.

Germany is set to vote on a package Thursday about whether to give a rescue fund more powers to fight Europe's debt crisis. Finland's parliament approved legislation on Wednesday, lifting some of the uncertainty over the debt crisis issue which has been dogging financial markets since late July.

"This is a market that has been fluctuating and is thoroughly susceptible to any news, any rumors, any innuendos," about Europe, said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 26 points, or 0.2 percent, to 11,214 shortly after 12:15 Eastern Wednesday. Microsoft Corp. rose 1.5 percent, the most of the 30 companies in the Dow, after announcing an expanded smartphone partnership with Samsung.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 2, or 0.2 percent, to 1,172. The Nasdaq composite fell 7, or 0.3 percent, to 2,539.

Amazon.com shot up 4.6 percent after the online retailer unveiled a new tablet device called the Kindle Fire. It will cost $199 and will rival Apple Inc.'s iPad.

Jabil Circuit Inc. rose 9 percent, the most of any company in the S&P 500, after the electronic parts maker reported strong earnings and a fourth-quarter earnings forecast that was better than analysts had anticipated.

The government also said orders for manufactured goods fell just 0.1 percent in August, a smaller decline than economists predicted. That reassured investors that U.S. manufacturing is still healthy.

Gap Adventures ends legal standoff with clothing giant Gap Inc ...

Gap Adventures Ends Legal Standoff with Clothing Giant Gap Inc.

BT-GAdventures.jpg

The new G Adventures logo (Courtesy G Adventures)

What happens when your travel company happens to have the same name as one of the world's largest clothing retailers?

Well, in the case of Gap Adventures versus Gap Inc., Gap Adventures ended up changing its name to G Adventures after losing a legal battle against the apparel giant and deciding to put an end to the courtroom warfare.

Following a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by Gap Inc. in which it was ruled that Gap Adventures had to change its name, Bruce Poon Tip, founder of Toronto-based Gap Adventures, said he just didn't have the energy to keep fighting Gap Inc. anymore.

"We could have gone into 20 years of appeals if we wanted to. And we could have stayed Gap Adventures," Poon Tip said. "I just decided to stop fighting."

In a June 24 decision in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled in favor of Gap Inc. on trademark infringement, noting that "Gap Adventures has used similar marks in commerce such that there is likelihood of confusion."

Four days after the ruling, Poon Tip called the decision "unfounded," and said he would appeal. On Wednesday, he said the decision is still in the appeal process, but that the company decided to change its name anyways to put an end to legal proceedings that have cost more than $5 million.

"They spent four times that. They didn?t beat us, they out-spent us," said Poon Tip, referring to Gap Inc.

Once the decision was made to find a new name, Poon Tip said that the company invested heavily in brand research, but that "ultimately, we decided against all the names that we had tested ? it was more of an emotional and internal decision in the end."

Poon Tip said that the company looked at examples like the W hotels.

"We wanted to do something innovative. We didn't want to be another travel name. It was a very tough and bold decision in the name. We wanted to own a space," he said.

Regardless of what happens with the appeal, Poon Tip said he's sticking with the decision to be G Adventures, a name that will be implemented globally on Oct. 1.

Poon Tip founded Gap Adventures in 1990, and the company has grown to more than 1,300 employees since. Its new website is Gadventures.com.

Leonce Gaiter: Chutzpah! Obama's Black Caucus Speech

President Barack Obama told blacks on Saturday to quit crying and complaining and "put on your marching shoes" to follow him into battle for jobs and opportunity. AP

Follow him? If the President wants anyone to follow him, he had better start leading -- something he has consistently failed to do since his inauguration. He did not lead while the health reform debate devolved into a national joke and coughed up a bill that Americans still do not understand. He did not lead the march for job creation when the economy proved to be in much worse shape than his economic advisors had forecast. As a matter of fact, he did the opposite: he publicly made the Republican case for job-killing austerity measures while trumpeting his willingness to weaken entitlements on which the middle class depend.

The President said that "blacks need to have faith in the future and understand that the fight won't be won if they don't rally to his side." Suddenly, there is a "fight" in the President's mind.

Since the election, the Obama administration's working theory has been that the first-best outcome is striking a deal with Speaker John Boehner and, if that fails, the second-best outcome is showing that they genuinely, honestly wanted to strike a deal with Speaker John Boehner. - Washington Post

Some fight -- compromise your principles or desperately try to compromise them. Now, suddenly, it's election season, and he's magically switched from conciliating to fighting. Unfortunately, this is not the fight for the longevity of the American dream; it is not a fight for a restoration of a vibrant middle class. It's more craven than that. It is a fight for his own job. That is the only cause for which this President has displayed a "fire in the belly." Come election time, he is all feisty speeches, ultimatums and "bring it on," bluster. The day after the election, he is the Cave Man -- the one who caves to the slightest right wing pressure to sacrifice the promises he made during his election phase, like the promise he made to defend Social Security, like the promise he made to reform the Patriot act and to robustly defend labor rights.

As if chiding his black audience for laziness, he told them to "take off your bedroom slippers. Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We have work to do."

His audience applauded. How desperate are we to see a black face in high office that we applaud insults. We're supposed to stop complaining that Obama has consistently ignored the economic advice that turned out to be correct -- and continues to employ the economic advisors who have been wrong about everything -- who have helped craft the policies that have done nothing to heal an economy with tens of millions of Americans unemployed, underemployed, frightened, and desperate.

As if to preening before a mirror in his shiny suit of self-righteousness, Obama has tested a theory of governance that bespoke naivete to the point of dilettantism. Washington Post again:

...That was the thinking that led the White House to reward the GOP's debt-ceiling brinksmanship by offering Boehner a "grand bargain" that cut Social Security, raised the Medicare age, and included less new revenue than even the bipartisan Gang of Six had called for. It was also a theory that happened to fit Obama's brand as a postpartisan uniter and his personal preferences for campaigning on achievements rather than against his opponents. But though it came close to happening, the "grand bargain" ultimately fell apart. Twice.

The collapse of that deal taught them two things: Boehner doesn't have the internal support in his caucus to strike a grand bargain with them, and the American people don't give points for effort.

What American does not know that his/her countrymen value results over intent when it comes to politics? What American does not know that his countrymen admire strength and hold weakness in contempt? Barack Obama and his advisers did not know. Or were they so blinded by the bright, shiny image of themselves as Messianic post-partisans that they ignored the facts repeatedly slapping them about the face?

Obama has no right to demand that anyone follow him. He hasn't led us anywhere worth going. He hasn't even tried. He's been too busy polishing his mirror image as a post-partisan "better than that" non-politician, despite running as a bona fide progressive promising a bold, progressive agenda.

How many Americans' jobs and savings and houses and children's educations has he sacrificed to his preferred self image? Until he publicly acknowledges that he was wrong to do so, how can we trust him or follow him -- or vote for him again?

Teachers and Scientists: Building the Future

Scientist volunteers and teachers can now make educational connections in classrooms through 1,000 Scientists in 1,000 Days, a new service offered by Scientific American

U.S. students are lagging behind those of other countries in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) proficiency. Meanwhile, K-12 STEM teachers?many of whom, instructing the earlier grades especially, may not have a degree in science or related fields?often must focus on trying to ?teach to the test.? What if they could invite researchers into the classroom to lead a lab exercise with students, to inspire kids about what being a scientist is really like, or to update them about the latest findings in their field?

That was the inspiration behind 1,000 Scientists in 1,000 Days, a Scientific American program that helps to connect teachers and scientists. We launched the sign-up component of the program in May, and more than 1,100 scientists, from all around the U.S., already have signed up to volunteer.

Now, educators can use the service to locate STEM professionals. Working together, scientists and teachers can help build a better future for our students and our country.

Scientific American is launching this program as part of Change the Equation activities led by our parent Nature Publishing Group. Whether you are a STEM professional, an educator or a student, we hope you find the service useful. We welcome your feedback as well, below in the comments section, or email us at 1000scientists@sciam.com.

Should Chris Christie Run for President? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | With the golden boy (Rick Perry) of Texas nearly down for the count after dismal showings at each of his three debate appearances and Sarah Palin still flirting but refusing to get her groove on and yesterday's news, Michele Bachmann, serving up gaffes like a hostess who made too many crab puffs, and the rest of the field unelectable in a general election against lackluster Barack Obama, Republicans seem eager to serve up the next great hope: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The straight-talking Christie has not given himself any wiggle room in his declarations that he will not run for president but that doesn't stop speculators from wondering whether he will use his speech today at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to launch his campaign.

Sometimes in the heat of presidential politics, I think perhaps we engross ourselves so much in the characters and the caricatures of the people running for that office that we forget to stop and consider what sort of person we want serving us in that most challenging capacity. So when the various candidates come into play, we end up measuring them against each other more often than against a standard. The result is nothing short of a circus, and it seems all we end up with are clowns.

Christie's people say he's not running. The Republican Party needs to get used to the fact that unless it caves on some of its hard-line platform agenda such as banning same-sex marriage, getting comfortable with gays serving openly in the military and taxing the wealthy, that Democrats, no matter how disillusioned we may be by Obama, are not going to vote for a Republican.

Gary Johnson, who I think should switch parties, has warned the party it should get away from social issues and concentrate on the economy. He is the best hope Republicans against Obama, but the party isn't about to vote for a man that liberal. Johnson is right, but that ship has sailed. Democrats have already decided this next election will be about social issues.

Should Christie run? I don't care either way, though I think it would be bad for his health if he does. Until the Republican Party finds consensus on what it will be about, it doesn't matter if the next big thing is Christie, someone else on the stage or a reincarnation of conservative demigod Ronald Reagan.

The selection process is muddied because the agenda is muddied. The party must unify or split. Divided against itself as it is, it will not stand. When the party is settled on an agenda, that's when their front-runner will matter.

Study: 3D gaming unpopular among 3DS owners -Destructoid

Study: 3D gaming unpopular among 3DS owners photo

Research group Interpret LLC claims that almost a third of 3DS owners feel the system's main attraction -- its 3D screen -- actively detracts from the gaming experience. Shockingly, there are even people who don't know the 3DS can do 3D! You'd think the name was a clue.

Of the 1,600 people polled, only 60% knew that the handheld had a 3D function. Of that group, 28% knew that it didn't require 3D glasses to use. Among users who knew of the 3D feature, 28% thought it was detrimental to gameplay, 22% thought it was an improvement, and 13% played without it enabled.?

1,600 isn't a huge number, but I've seen so many comments from people who claim they turn the 3D feature off after they've checked out how it looks on a new game. Personally, I try and always play with it enabled, but even I have to turn it down?occasionally, because it can get really distracting.?

Nintendo recently advertised that the 3D could be turned off, seemingly aware that consumers might be turned off by the gimmick completely. When you have to assure people?that your main selling point isn't mandatory, that doesn't look good. That's like the Vita promising consumers that you can play games with PSOne-era graphics.?

28% of 3DS players say 3D detracts from gameplay [GameSpot]

Fatherhood may be a kick in the old testosterone, but it may also help keep a man alive. New research suggests that dads are a little less likely to die of heart-related problems than childless men are.

The study ? by the AARP, the government and several universities ? is the largest ever on male fertility and mortality, involving nearly 138,000 men. Although a study like this can't prove that fatherhood and mortality are related, there are plenty of reasons to think they might be, several heart disease experts said.

Marriage, having lots of friends and even having a dog can lower the chance of heart problems and cardiac-related deaths, previous research suggests. Similarly, kids might help take care of you or give you a reason to take better care of yourself.

Also, it takes reasonably good genes to father a child. An inability to do so might mean a genetic weakness that can spell heart trouble down the road.

"There is emerging evidence that male infertility is a window into a man's later health," said Dr. Michael Eisenberg, a Stanford University urologist and fertility specialist who led the study. "Maybe it's telling us that something else is involved in their inability to have kids."

The study was published online Monday by the journal Human Reproduction.

Last week, a study by other researchers of 600 men in the Philippines found that testosterone, the main male hormone, drops after a man becomes a dad. Men who started out with higher levels of it were more likely to become fathers, suggesting that low levels might reflect an underlying health issue that prevents reproduction, Eisenberg said.

In general, higher levels of testosterone are better, but too much or too little can cause HDL, or "good cholesterol," to fall ? a key heart disease risk factor, said Dr. Robert Eckel, past president of the American Heart Association and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver.

"This is a hot topic," Eckel said. "I like this study because I have five children," he joked, but he said many factors such as job stress affect heart risks and the decision to have children.

Researchers admit they couldn't measure factors like stress, but they said they did their best to account for the ones they could. They started with more than 500,000 AARP members age 50 and over who filled out periodic surveys starting in the 1990s for a long-running research project sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

For this study, researchers excluded men who had never been married so they could focus on those most likely to have the intent and opportunity to father a child. Men with cancer or heart disease also were excluded to compare just men who were healthy when the study began.

Of the remaining 137,903 men, 92 percent were fathers and half had three or more children. After an average of 10 years of follow-up, about 10 percent had died. Researchers calculated death rates according to the number of children, and adjusted for differences in smoking, weight, age, household income and other factors.

They saw no difference in death rates between childless men and fathers. However, dads were 17 percent less likely to have died of cardiovascular causes than childless men were.

Now for all the caveats.

Researchers don't know how many men were childless by choice and not because of a fertility problem.

They don't know what fertility problems the men's partners may have had that could have left them childless.

They didn't have cholesterol or blood pressure information on the men ? key heart risk factors.

Less than 5 percent of participants were blacks or other minorities, so the results may not apply to them.

All those questions aside, however, some prominent heart experts were reassured by the study's large size and the steps researchers took to adjust for heart disease risk factors.

"I think there's something there," and social science supports the idea that children can lower heart risks, said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and genetics expert at Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif. "Whether it's with a pet, a spouse or social interaction ... all those things are associated with better outcomes."

Dr. Daniel Rader, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, said: "It's biologically plausible that there's a connection," but the reduced risk attributed to having children "is pretty modest."

Men often ask him what they can do to keep from dying of a heart attack, he said.

"I'm not really prepared to, on the basis of this, tell them to start having a few kids," Rader said.

Americans Converge to Confront Illegal Immigration in New Mexico ...

September 21, 2011 (MMD Newswire) ? Americans who represent the over 77% of US citizens who oppose driver licenses for illegal aliens are converging on New Mexico by phone today. This effort is to support Republican Governor Susana Martinez and the ground swell of New Mexico residents who are fighting to stop illegal immigrants from receiving state sanctioned licenses.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, America?s most prominent political action committee fighting illegal immigration, has asked for volunteers across the US to contact New Mexico lawmakers to lobby on behalf of Governor Martinez and the American majority opposing licenses for illegal immigrants.

?Everyone knows that New Mexico is one of the last hold outs still giving licenses to illegal aliens despite the fact that almost every other state has stopped doing that due to public pressure,? said William Gheen president of ALIPAC. ?We want our national supporters to help those loyal American citizens on the ground in New Mexico who are fighting to stop the illegal immigrant invasion of America.?

Thousands of calls, e-mails, and faxes are flowing into the New Mexico legislature from Americans in all 50 states who are fed up with illegal aliens traveling to New Mexico from across the nation to get the driver licenses they need to facilitate their unlawful presence in America. ALIPAC?s direct activist network is over 40,000 strong and the group appears in the national media on a regular basis including an appearances on CBS Nightly News and FOX to discuss immigration and license issues.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) has successfully played a role backing legislation designed to prevent illegal aliens from obtaining driver licenses in seven other states in the last five years.

Activists hope that more secure licenses in New Mexico will increase security for all Americans while increasing pressure on illegal immigrants to leave the United States on their own accord.

?Since 9/11, American states have slowly responded to massive public pressure to cut off licenses for illegal immigrants,? said William Gheen. ?While Governor Martinez is representing the vast majority of her constituents, it is clear that we have some lawmakers in the New Mexico legislature who support the illegal alien invaders over the American citizens they are supposed to represent. Let?s hope we can persuade them to do their jobs correctly.?

The Albuquerque Journal reports (Nov. 12, 2011) that police have arrested a growing number of suspected undocumented immigrants who have traveled from as far as China to fraudulently obtain New Mexico licenses.

According to Rasmussen national polling from November of 2007 over 77% of American adults are opposed to making drivers licenses available to people who are in the country illegally

An Albuquerque Journal poll found that 67% of New Mexico?s residents oppose licenses for illegal aliens despite the presence of a large volume of illegal immigrants in the state.

Importance of Database/ Data Communications systems in the ...

Consider a group of adult website developers working on a database of large number of images with a continuous streaming of video and audio files. How can they manage the image data flow and at the same time facilitate the availability to the client web pages?

For these adult web developers, it is necessary to synchronize the database with proper data communication channels so that the images get transferred to the database continuously and at the same time the client?s browser also can access the required images without any hindrance. A database/ data communication application will provide a method to separate the development process from the tedious task of storage management and the physical characteristics of the terminal network, so that the application can be developed independently to interact with both the communication channel and the database. A database/ data communication application gives both the database management and communication capabilities to the developer.

While designing the complete architecture, special attention should be given to database transaction management and Data Communication facility which would support user-given request and other processing devices (such as, data-input from a streaming video channel as described in the example of adult web developer above simultaneously.

The Database/ Data Communications system also provides adequate security arrangements for both local and remote access. Since the whole setup will be provided with various interfaces for standard programming language operations and support for both network and hierarchical relationships, the security arrangement and data encryption are usually robust in nature. The Database/ Data Communications systems also support a considerable number of users (with dynamic options to increase it) and greater levels of transaction processing capabilities.

Be it all active adult developers or DBAs managing financial databases or application developers, Database/Data Communications systems can provide the exact solution to issues involving continuous data access and distribution over a large network.

Now is the Season for Investing in Gold-mining Stocks - Money ...

First, TIS analysts say the miners have had to deal with rising input costs, like oil, over the past 10 months.Looking ahead, those costs are likely to rise at a slower pace.

Investing in Gold-mining stocks Second, the stocks are cheap.

Some are trading below 10 times earnings, and most have ditched their hedges. So if gold does indeed shoot over $2,000 in the next few months, as some have predicted, it's fair to expect margin expansion and good earnings growth in a no-growth world.

Gold-mining Stocks Under-Owned

TIS also points out gold-mining stocks are under-owned. The total value of all gold-mining shares in the world is about $240 billion, but less than 1% of all global pension fund assets hold gold or gold stocks.

If market conditions persuade them to double their weighting in gold shares, it would cause $300 billion in new buying that would leave shares in shortage.

You may be surprised to learn that most pension funds and individuals have not been investing in gold-mining stocks or the metal itself, even though gold has been the trade of the millennium. With short rates at near zero, and "real rates" (bond yields minus inflation) under zero, gold's lack of a dividend, a major consideration for fund managers, becomes less of an issue.

While it may seem gold can't get much higher, remember that this has happened before.

The move from 1973 to 1980 featured an explosion in price from $100 to $875. That was parabolic, and we could see it happen again if politics remain unstable, inflation swells higher as the Fed floods the economy with more money, and real interest rates remain roughly negative.

Gold rose roughly $500 an ounce during QE2. How far could it go if the Fed goes for QE3 at some point?

The Fed opted for "Operation Twist" Wednesday, but with the economy wavering, Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke may feel bound to go "all in" with QE3 at the next meeting or the one after that.

[Editor's Note: In this report, investing expert Jon D. Markman underscores why gold miners remain an alluring profit play - and he offers several gold-mining exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for readers to consider.

But there's more to this story.

Because gold-mining stocks have lagged gold during the "yellow metal's" meteoric run-up, they remain cheap - so cheap, in fact, that whispers of a takeover frenzy are making the rounds of the investment banks of Wall Street.

Executive Editor William Patalon is keenly aware of that takeover speculation, and asked Peter Krauth, Money Morning's resident natural-resources expert, to identify some potential takeover targets in the mining sector.

But there was one condition: The stocks had to be a good investment in their own right.

In today's issue of Private Briefing, our premium advisory service, Patalon details those gold-mining picks.

Taiwan VP: President wants China political talks

(AP) ? A U.S. cable released by WikiLeaks cites Taiwan's vice president as telling the top American diplomat on the island that President Ma Ying-jeou would open political talks with China if re-elected to a second term.

Vincent Siew's June 2009 statement to de facto American ambassador Stephen Young is the clearest indication yet by a senior Ma official that the president would expand on existing economic talks if re-elected in January.

The cable quotes Siew as saying political talks would touch on "a peace treaty, a formal end to hostilities and development of bilateral military confidence mechanisms" with China.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. China still claims Taiwan as its own and seeks its integration into the mainland.

(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Thousands of nurses at nearly three dozen hospitals in Northern and Central California are set to go on strike Thursday over benefit cuts and other concessions sought by hospital management.

The California Nurses Association ? the union organizing the strike ? estimates that nearly 23,000 nurses will walk off the job at 7 a.m. at 33 not-for-profit hospitals run by Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health, and at the independent Children's Hospital Oakland. The hospitals include Kaiser facilities in Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose, and the Berkeley and Oakland campuses of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center ? a Sutter Health-affiliated hospital.

Sutter Health and Children's Hospital are prepared to bring in replacement nurses, according to officials at each of the hospital groups. Kaiser Permanente says it, too, has made preparations.

The focus of the planned strike is Sutter Health, where contract talks are under way at a number of hospitals.

Management has proposed a broad range of concessions that would affect nurses and patients, union officials say.

"They've taken a very hard line," said Charles Idelson, a spokesman for the California Nurses Association, which is part of National Nurses United.

In addition to asking nurses to accept thousands of dollars in higher costs for their own health care, Sutter's proposed concessions would reduce the ability of certain nurses to advocate for patients, cut pay for newly hired nurses, and slash vacations and holiday pay, the union says.

Idelson said the goal of the strike is to get Sutter to withdraw its "unwarranted and unacceptable concession demands."

Karen Garner, a spokeswoman for Sutter, said the hospital offers its nurses competitive wages and salaries but has an obligation to keep health care costs down for patients.

"The union is choosing to make a sensational statement rather than offer a full picture," she said.

At Children's Hospital Oakland, officials are prepared to bring in replacement nurses and have non-unionized nurses assist with patient care, according to hospital spokeswoman Erin Goldsmith. The hospital, which has roughly 730 unionized nurses, has also rescheduled most elective surgeries, she said.

Union members at Children's Hospital, who have been without a contract for more than a year, have objected to a proposed increase in the cost of a health care plan the hospital offers.

The planned walkout by nurses at Kaiser is intended to show solidarity with other Kaiser employees who are in contract talks and facing demands for cuts in health and retirement benefits, Idelson said. Kaiser Permanente says it is bargaining in good faith and has called the planned nurses' strike "disruptive to patient care and unnecessary."

The strike is scheduled for one day, but Sutter Health and Children's Hospital officials say nurses will not be able to immediately return to work because the hospitals' contracts with replacement agencies require a minimum number of days of service.

Satellite still on for Friday freefall from space (AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? A dead 6-ton satellite is getting closer and closer, and is expected to smack down on Earth on Friday.

NASA's old research satellite is expected to come crashing down through the atmosphere Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. The spacecraft will not be passing over North America then, the space agency said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The predictions should become more precise by Thursday afternoon and certainly by Friday.

"It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any more certainty," NASA said.

An estimated 26 pieces ? representing 1,200 pounds ? are expected to survive.

NASA is anticipating a splashdown rather than a landing. Nearly three-quarters of the world is covered with water. The Aerospace Corporation in California, in fact, predicts that re-entry will occur over the Pacific late Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. But that's give or take 14 hours.

The 20-year-old Upper Research Atmosphere Satellite will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to fall uncontrolled from the sky in 32 years.

It is expected to break into more than 100 pieces as it enters the atmosphere, most of it burning up. The heaviest metal parts are expected to reach Earth, the biggest chunk weighing about 300 pounds. The debris could be scattered over an area about 500 miles long.
