Your Health and Safety Rights at Work

Most people spend a great deal of their time in their workplace and as the workplace is somewhere which can be very dangerous, these people are often at risk. The extent of the danger which workers face is usually dependent on the industry which they work in but regardless of the industry there is almost always some form of risk. An employee can and should take their safety into their own hands by acting accordingly when at work and not taking unnecessary risks or ignoring safety procedures. Even if an employee does act accordingly though there are still risks there and an employee then has rights to protect them from these remaining risks.

Despite workers doing everything in their own power to keep themselves safe, it is actually the responsibility of the employer to ensure that they have a safe place to work. This is the employee?s right and is furthered in that employers should also take any possible measures to eliminate any risks that are present in the workplace they are providing.

An employee?s health and safety at work doesn?t only cover potential accidents. It is important for an employee?s health that they are not overworked and worked relentlessly also. Employees are entitled to both rest breaks and holiday days away from work. If an employee works more than six consecutive hours then they are allowed a 20 minute break to recuperate and relax before continuing their shift.

As an employee you have a right to be told of any risks that you might face when in a workplace and it is the responsibility of your employer to make you aware of these risks. Your employer should also make you aware of what measures have been taken to minimise these risks and how these measures will help to keep you safe when at work.

If your employer has told you the potential risks and measures taken and you still feel unsafe, you can explain your concerns to your employer. If they decide not to act on your concerns or consistently fail to rectify the problem then you have a right to seek further assistance from a trade union representative or health and safety officer.
