America's oldest sports car coming to Cherry Hill

CHERRY HILL ? The 1907 American Underslung isn?t an old-fashioned softball pitch.

It?s the first American sports car.

One of these very rare roadsters will be on view Friday at the American Collectors Insurance?s celebration of National Collector Car Appreciation Day.

The event will take place at the insurance company's headquarters at 496 N. Kings Highway from 4 to 7 p.m. The rain date is Monday.

Hundreds of cars, motorcycles, trucks and other unique vehicles have been registered for the show, including a newly minted 2012 Jaguar and a ?Corvette Corral.? Models of this well-known sports car from each decade of its production will be shown.

?We figured this would be a great way to support the day and invite our local policyholders to participate,? said Jill Bookman, CEO of the insurance company, which specializes in classic cars and other collectibles.

Owners of classic cars who haven?t registered as yet can come as well.

?Simply bring your cool ride and grab a spot,? reads the website for the event, but it notes that ?space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-park basis. The lot opens for arrivals at 3 p.m.?

The event, which will include music and munchies, is free, but reservations for vehicle owners and spectators are requested at www.AmericanCollectors.com/NCCAD.

The event provides an opportunity for local hobbyists to check out some unique vehicles while chatting with other enthusiasts.

?There?s sure to be something for everyone in the family to enjoy,? said Crystal DeCotiis, spokeswoman for the event.

The American Underslung will be provided by the Simeone Car Museum of?rare race cars?in Philadelphia.

Information will be available at the event about two auto-related charities: Carz 'n Toys (www.carzntoys.org), which provides toys for children in Virtua Health System?s pediatric units, and the Road Home (www.theroadhomeusa.org), an organization that supports returning veterans with ?social, training and employment opportunities in the automotive restoration industry.?

Since American Collectors insures vehicles that are well cared for and driven less than?regular cars, ?the payment is less,? Bookman said, but the coverage is better. The company recognizes the value of these vehicles as?classics, not just?old cars, she said.

It is co-sponsoring the event with Hemmings Motor News. National Collector Car Appreciation Day is an event promoted by the Specialty Equipment Market Association, of which American Collectors Insurance is a member.
