For several years now I have followed the story of Representative Barney Frank attempting to convince the Federal legislature that the time to regulate online gambling is well overdue. ?However, despite all of Frank?s efforts and close calls there is still no federal regulation of gambling in place. ?That has caused a lot of people to look toward the states. ?Regulating gambling has always been a state issue in this country and many people believe that long before there is any sort of federal laws on the book, online gambling will be regulated on a state by state basis. ?However, I feel like it is almost impossible for the Federal government to stay out of the process once one state gets involved.
The reason why it is possible for the United States to come crashing down on several online gambling operations all at once, as they did about a year ago, is because as it currently stands online casinos have not been legalized in this country. ?However, things become very sticky when even one state decides to regulate gambling. ?Because of the global nature of the Internet it will be very difficult for states to prevent residents of other states from using their services. ?States like Utah, which do not allow any form of legal gambling whatsoever, will likely take issue with other states making online gambling ready and available for anyone that can control a mouse. I personally believe that each state has the right to offer or not offer gambling as they see fit.
