GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Newt Gingrich says he would sign legislation repealing Democrats' health care and Wall Street overhauls when he takes office on Jan. 21, 2013.
But the Constitution the former House speaker constantly cites during his presidential campaign says the transition of power takes place on Jan. 20.
Gingrich's flub on Wednesday is just the latest example of candidates making missteps as they seek the presidential nomination. A day earlier, Texas Gov. Rick Perry suggested the voting age is 21, not 18.
Gingrich aides say Gingrich would take power on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, but would have his public Inauguration celebrations the next day. They note President Ronald Reagan did the same in 1985.
Even so, it does little to help a GOP field struggling with the facts.
