If you think poetry performances are boring, you'll be in for a big surprise. These four poets rock.
Bruce King, Oneida poet and playwright. He taught theatre and theatre production at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Bruce is also a celebrated painter. His plays have been studied and produced all over North America.
Tara Yvonne Trudell is studying for her BFA in Media Arts with a concentration in Film and Audio. She has resumed writing poetry after a break of almost ten years and is passionate about combining poetry and film to create a visual art form of her own. She is a mother of four children and raising them to be socially aware and conscious of the injustices that plague our society. This is a top priority of hers as a she rediscovers her own word in a world that only attempts to silence the Indigenous spirit. She is of Mexican, Spanish, and Santee Sioux descent and constantly cultivates her path to include representation of her ancestors and earth.
Alex Jacobs is a Mohawk visual and recording artist working in fabric art and poetry. He comes from Akwesasne or St. Regis Mohawk territory which straddles the US and Canadian border and lives in Santa Fe New Mexico. Alex is a graduate of IAIA and the Kansas City Art Institute where he developed his writing and worked in performance art, sculptural techniques, painting and installation.
Janet Rogers is a Mohawk/Tuscarora writer from the Six Nations band in southern Ontario. She was born in Vancouver British Columbia and has been living on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish people (Victoria, British Columbia) since 1994. Janet works in the genres of poetry, short fiction, spoken word performance poetry, video poetry and recorded poems with music and script writing.
